I love how Reptilian is so much more than his initial impression.

Hmm. While I’m thoroughly enjoying the fight panels, the way the team is facing off against their opponents sequentially makes me wonder exactly what the tournament bracket looks like. (The idea that the underdog team has to fight their way up through everyone to the top is cool thematically, it’s just a little amusing. It seems unusually harsh of the academy to actually set it up that way.)

When I was a kid, the local tennis club set up a month-long tournament where the contenders were initially ranked from #1 to #20 (if we were twenty), then #1 played against #2, #3 against #4 and so on, and if you defeated someone higher than you, you went up a rank and they went down one. I can’t remember how they made sure people wouldn’t play against each other twice, but there might be some sort of similar setup here.

Though since the ranks are the same than on page “Fact finding” (2025-02-17), I guess it may just be fight your way up… but maybe Shadowguard get their shot against Sentineles Primi anyway, so that there’s a new ranking order on the next tournament?

Or is it an ELO-like thing (the ranking system for international chess players, among others)? The higher-ranked the opponent you defeat is, the more points you score.

I’d be interested in the technical details too, of course.

Anyway, if it’s a pool tournament where you have to confront every opponent once, it’s actually nicer to the underdog to have them start with the lowest one and go up one rank each time. Sure, by the time you’re up against the top team, you’ve been through nine fights against some of the top teams… but so have they.

As someone who really enjoyed old Wildstorm comics (up until ’96, say), I love how WildC.R.E.W. features a Grifter counterpart, complete with mask and pose, though all clad in purple, and an agressive, white-haired lady, though her powers seem to come more from Spartan.

And I find it interesting that Snowfall looks uncertain in the first panel, a bit doubtful in the third, and definitely assertive to say the least in the fourth. Also, with a very hands-on approach compared to the previous panels.

I’m not sure what Mentelle has against Klein blue, but as it happens she’s the one facing off the person wearing that color in the two occurrences that there’s one visible.

Oh, and Reptilian and Roughhouse are very similar in powers and abilities, and in approaches too, seeing as how they make frequent use of a boot to the face.
