I had just hit “Post Comment” when it hit me that for all we know, “one thing leads to another” might just mean that while they were actually in love with each other, they hadn’t meant to make love that evening (if only because they might feel quite weak after the ordeal).
It might also mean that Snowfall was already born, but when the snow spirit told her mother that it wanted their newborn, she bargained for it to take Snowfall instead. A harsh choice, but there have been classic tragedies revolving around similar ones.
You know, when she said her parents were scientists on that expedition, I assumed they were in a relationship with each other before going. The last panel, on the other hand, seems to imply that they weren’t.
I’ll try to check my assumptions better, further on down the road. This here writer is a canny fellow.
Oh, and I assume that the switch to present tense in the last two boxes is stylistic license on Snowfall’s behalf. I’m just mentioning it in case it isn’t.
